The legendary John Coltrane grew up in High Point. Since 2002, the High Point Arts Council has sponsored the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop (JCJW) for youth as a tribute to this world famous jazz saxophonist.

For the summer of 2022, students will be able to attend a jazz summer workshop in High Point. The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., July 25-29, 2022, and will be located at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts on E. Washington Drive in High Point. The registration fee for the workshop is $150 (partial and full scholarships are available—see the registration form). Students will receive a snack each day and a t-shirt on the last day of the workshop.

During the workshop, students will concentrate on small group ensemble playing, jazz theory, jazz improvisation, and listening and analysis. Attendees will be taught by educators and performers who are highly regarded as jazz specialists. The instructors for the workshop will be led by Dr. Drew Hays; an active performer of both classical and jazz music in our community. He is a founding member and baritone saxophonist of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra. He has performed throughout North Carolina with the group including at the John Coltrane International Jazz Festival in High Point, and serves as one of the ensemble’s in-house arrangers. Additionally, Drew serves as Chair of the Music Department at Guilford College, where he teaches Jazz Studies, Music Theory, and Saxophone.

On Friday evening, July 39, at 7:00 p.m., students will play before an audience at a free jazz concert for the community. This concert will be held at Penn-Griffin where the students will perform on the stage of the school that Coltrane attended in his youth.
