John Coltrane Jazz Workshop 2020

John Coltrane Jazz Workshop

The legendary John Coltrane grew up in High Point. Since 2002, the High Point Arts Council has sponsored the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop (JCJW) for youth as a tribute to this world famous jazz saxophonist.

For the summer of 2020, students will be able to attend a jazz summer workshop in High Point. The workshop is available to high school students with a high level of ability in bass, percussion, guitar/keyboard, brass (trumpet, trombone), or woodwind instruments (clarinet, flute, saxophone). Students must have multiple years of band experience/private lessons and know how to read music to be eligible for the workshop (partial and full scholarships are available).

The workshop is from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., July 27 – 31, 2020, and will be located at the Centennial Station Arts Center at 121 S. Centennial Street in High Point. The registration fee for the workshop is $150 (partial and full scholarships are available—see the back of this form).

During the workshop, students will concentrate on small group ensemble playing, jazz theory, jazz improvisation, and listening and analysis. Attendees will be taught by educators and performers who are highly regarded as jazz specialists. The instructors for the workshop will be led by Wally West, saxophonist, Administrative Director and member of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra, and adjunct lecturer of Jazz Studies at Gardner-Webb University and UNC Charlotte. Wally will act as Artistic Director. Joining him as instructors are pianist Matt Reid, drummer Kassem Williams, and bassist Will Ledbetter.

On Friday evening, July 31, at 7:00 p.m., students will play a virtual concert from the Centennial Station Arts Center that will be livestreamed on Facebook.

Your child’s well-being is paramount in how we conduct this workshop. We will only have a maximum of 30 students, 4 jazz instructors, and minimal support staff inside the facility during the workshop. Instead of having traditional band spacing on-stage, we will have the students spread out over our theatre’s audience area. There will be a minimum of 10-feet of spacing between the students while they are practicing and playing. During breaks, we will enforce a 6-foot spacing rule and require the use of face coverings. We will have plenty of hand sanitizer available and regularly wipe down hand rails, door knobs, and restrooms. Any drinks and snacks will be in individual serving containers. We will ask and expect your child to respect our staff and follow these procedures to ensure everyone’s well-being.
